The United Nations special envoy and head of its assistance mission in Afghanistan Deborah Lyons on Tuesday met with former President Hamid Karzai, discussing women’s rights, freedom of media and the importance of an intra-Afghan inclusive political dialogue.

Karzai’s office meanwhile said that women and girls rights, including their right to education and work, were among topics of the discussion.
Since the return of the Islamic Emirate to power, girls from secondary schools have been banned from attending to school.
Foreign countries have increased their humanitarian aid to Afghanistan since the Islamic Emirate took power, but halted its development assistance.
They have conditioned their response to Afghanistan crises and recognition of the new government on the behavior of its new rulers and until the rulers provide assurances that they will uphold human rights.
The Islamic Emirate has pledged girls’ secondary schools will open soon.
