April 25 (The Killid Group) − Saudi Arabia has decided to halt the punishment of flogging, and to replace it with prison sentences and/or fines, indicated a legal document circulated by the media.
BBC world news has reported of eliminating the punishment of “flogging” in Saudi Arabia, a country ranked as the worst place in terms of human rights in the world.
The Saudi newspapers quoted sources as saying that the courts are obligated to apply this principle and do not violate it in any way.
The last time that flogging in Saudi Arabia grabbed the headlines was in 2015 when blogger Raif Badawi was subjected to be punished in public, reportedly after being convicted of cybercrime and insulting Islam, BBC reported.
According to reports, the elimination of flogging as a punishment is the latest in a series of steps taken by the Kingdom to modernize its judicial system.
