Helmand Journalist Wounded in Embedded Mine Explosion

Helmand (The Killid) – A local journalist injured as the result of a magnetic mine, which was embedded to his car at Lashkar Gah city of southern province.

Omar Zuwak, Helmand governor spokesman, told the Killid, “At around 7:30 a.m. this morning, Sabawoon TV reporter Nisar Ahmad Ahamadi has been injured as the result of a magnetic mine that was embedded to his car at Karte Lagan of Lashkar Gah city.”

According to Zuwak, the victim is transferred to a nearby hospital and cited his condition “satisfyingly well”.

Meanwhile, provincial media officials condemned the attack in a statement, saying this is an act against the freedom of speech.

No group has so far taken responsibility for the incident.

This comes as Afghanistan has ranked among deadliest countries for journalists. The government, meanwhile, has always committed to supporting journalists and freedom of the press. Reports, however, show that journalists are still facing different kinds of threats.

Government’s statistics show that there are 96 TV channels, 65 radio stations and 911 print media in Kabul, as well as 107 TV channels, 284 radio stations, and 416 print media in other provinces.

All an all, there are 1,879 active media outlets in Afghanistan, which the government called as one of the main achievements of the country in the past 18 years.
