Interior Ministry Calls Off Checkpoint Firing

Residents decry what they call maladjusted actions of security forces in Afghanistan, urging the de facto rulers to deploy well-trained and uniformed personnel at security checkpoints.

“Many IEA forces in checkpoints have no special uniforms and are not well-trained,” Esmatullah, a Kabul resident, told TKG. “We urge the Islamic Emirate to launch short-term training programs for their forces and have them dressed in special uniforms.”

Aqel Jan Azzam, an Interior Ministry spokesman, said the government top security body has advised forces to target the vehicle tires when needed.

In past few months, he said, dozens of Islamic Emirate forces received training and will soon be deployed at security checkpoints.

The issue of uniform will also be resolved within the next two weeks, Azzam said.

Experts meanwhile say improper behaviors of security forces will create distance between them and people.

Government forces need to behave well with people, military affairs analyst Yousuf Amin Zazi spoke with TKG, and on the uniform, it is a part of discipline and distinguishes in between security forces and civilians.

Since the Islamic Emirate returned to power, several have been killed after security forces at checkpoints opened fire at them.

Last week, a medic was shot and killed by government forces after he crossed a checkpoint.
