Ghani to Launch Parliament Friday amid Criticism

Kabul – President Ashraf Ghani in a meeting with a number of winning candidates of parliamentary elections Wednesday said parliament will be inaugurated on Friday, as they see presence of the MPs at Grand Consultative Jirga a must.

The peace Jirga (national assembly) is due on April 29 and parliament will be inaugurated only a few days ahead of the Jirga, amid oppositions.

“One of the reasons that I was in a hurry, and I thank you all, is that the active presence of the people’s representatives in the Grand Consultative Jirga is necessary,” Ghani said as quoted by local media.

But critics suggested otherwise, saying the government cannot launch parliament unless the final result of Wolesi Jirga elections for the remaining provinces – including Kabul – be released by the Independent Election Commission.

Based on the legislation, the parliament should have been inaugurated for new MPs on March 6; but the government could not inaugurate the parliament, as IEC failed to comply with the due date, announcing the final result for the remaining provinces

Kabul (The Killid) – Dozens of candidates and their advocators took on a sit-in protest in front of the Independent Electoral Complaints Commission’s door Wednesday, urging for a quick release of the Wolesi Jirga elections’ results of the remaining provinces, including Kabul.

Khan Aqa Razaye, a candidate of the Wolesi Jirga from the capital – who made it to the preliminary result – called the commission to release the final result.

Feda Mohammad Ulfat Saleh, another candidate – who also brought his name through the preliminary list – said the government tends to inaugurate the parliament without the presence of representatives from Kabul, adding it oppresses the right of the residents in the capital city.

Meanwhile, Mohammad Khan Tarakhail, another winning candidate, exclaimed if the government will not announce the final result, he will halt the road to parliament and will foil the inauguration.

It comes after Afghan President Ashraf Ghani at a meeting Tuesday with a number of Parliamentarians – who reserved seats in recent elections – said he is ready to inaugurate parliament in upcoming few days, marking the nine terms for Afghanistan parliament.
