Half of Schools in the Eastern Zone are Without Buildings

The basic problems of Nangarhar, Kunar, Nuristan and Laghman residents are the lack of schools and schools without buildings, according to Killid Findings.

The research shows that in these four provinces, 769 out of 1,895 schools don’t have buildings and students are taught under the sun or rain.

Meanwhile, the Education Ministry officials in the eastern zone of Afghanistan confirmed the lack of buildings for schools in the mentioned provinces, saying that efforts are underway to construct school buildings and provide a suitable educational environment for students.

769 schools out of 1,895 do not have buildings in the eastern zone of Afghanistan, which caused the teaching process to slow down and students are taught under the sun and rain.

A primary school in Sutan village in the Dara-Noor district of Nuristan province don’t have a building. Students study under the shade of trees.

This school students complain about not paying attention to their school. Abdullah, a student at Sutan Village Primary School, says that they leave school when it rains and take shelter in the shade of trees in hot weather.

“Our school does not have a building, we sit and study under the sun or under the shadows of trees”, Abdullah says.

Jumagul, a teacher in this school, confirmed delaying the teaching process when the weather changes, saying that they let students leave during rain and wind. He asked the government to solve this problem.

Meanwhile, Qari Shams-ul-Haq, another teacher at Sutan village school, says in addition to the lack of a building, students are also facing a lack of books.

“Students of Sutan village school suffer from many problems, lack of shelter, lack of books and other facilities”, Shams-ul-Haq said.

Other eastern zone residents also complain lack of buildings for their schools and say this problem has disrupted the teaching process.

Abdul Wali, a resident of Pachiragam district of Nangarhar province, says that his children are studying in the open air due to the lack of school buildings.

“In most regions of Nangarhar province, especially in Pachiragam district, the lack of school buildings is a big problem. Most of the time students face problems. The government should pay attention to it”, Abdul Wali added.

Moreover, Ahmad Zubair, a resident of the Aleengar district of Laghman province, says that the school students, in addition to the lack of shelter and books, do not have clean drinking water.

“It is the government’s responsibility to provide education for all the people, build buildings for schools, and provide textbooks for students”, Zubair says.

On the other hand, Munir Ahmad, a resident of Kunar province, also complains lack of school books, asking the government to pay attention to this province’s education sector.

Munir says “Books do not exist at all. I have bought books for my children with my own money. Books and notebooks were distributed in schools before, but now nothing is given.”

Ministry of Education officials in the eastern zone confirmed the lack of school buildings in the eastern zone and emphasized taking measures to build schools and provide a suitable educational environment for students.

According to the information of Nangarhar Education Department, 220 out of 910 active schools in this province, do not have buildings and the students do not have access to clean drinking water.

The Nangarhar Education Department spokesman, Farhad Ahmad Stanikzai, says that currently more than 800 thousand students, including girls, are studying in this province’s schools, but they have many challenges.

“220 schools do not have buildings in different districts of Nangarhar, and students study under the sun and the shadows of trees,” Stanikzai said, adding that 18 school buildings have been built in the past year and they are trying to solve these problems.

The Nuristan Education Department spokesperson, Hikmatullah Tand also said that 154 out of 214 active schools in this province face a lack of buildings.

According to Tand, although some schools have been renovated by the aid agencies, as needed, the education sector has not paid attention in this province.

“There are about 214 schools in Nuristan province, of which only 60 schools have buildings. Other schools don’t have any buildings and students face many problems. Currently, 50,000 boys and girls study in these schools”, says Tand, adding that they have shared their problems with the Education Ministry, also asking supporting agencies to cooperate in the construction of school buildings.

At the same time, the Laghman Education Department officials say that in this province, 104 out of 277 schools, don’t have buildings and 169 don’t have walls.

Shah Wali Naqshbandi, the head of this department’s publications, in an interview with Killid, says that efforts are underway to solve these problems.

“There are 342 private and public schools in the centre and districts of Laghman, and more than 250,000 boys and girls are studying there. Of these, 277 schools are governmental schools, 104 of them are without buildings and 169 of them are without walls. The Ministry of Education will try to solve these problems”, Naqshbandi said.

It should be mentioned that more than 50% of schools in Kunar province are without buildings and there are no necessary facilities for students.

According to officials, 291 out of 494 active schools in Kunar, don’t have buildings and students are deprived of education during rain and wind.
