In a statement released Thursday, February 24, U.N. in Afghanistan said that a vaccination team member was killed in Takhar’s city of Taloqan, four “house-to-house” members were killed in Kunduz city and another worker was killed in Imam Sahib district of Kunduz.
The attacks took place today, drawing condemnation from the U.N. mission. It has called for an end to the “senseless violence” and bringing the perpetrators to justice.
The United Nations mission in Afghanistan added the polio vaccination campaign was suspended in these two provinces following the attack branded by U.N. and E.U. as “violation of international humanitarian law.”
The U.N. said last year, too, nine polio vaccination workers were killed. Today’s attacks were first of such attacks since polio vaccination campaign resumed in Afghanistan last November.
There was no claim of responsibility.
