The Afghan government released at least 12 additional Taliban prisoners in the western Herat province, said local officials.

Afghan Gov’t Releases over a Dozen Additional Taliban Prisoners

The aforementioned Taliban prisoners were released as a goodwill gesture and in order to facilitate the Afghan peace negotiations, Jailani Farhad, a spokesman for the provincial governor told TKG.

The total of Taliban prisoners released by the government has now hit more than 4,030.

Under a peace deal struck between the United States and the Taliban, the Afghan government is set to release 5,000 Taliban prisoners while the insurgents to free 1,000 captives of the government before the intra-Afghan negotiations begin.

The Taliban has claimed under a peace pact the group signed with the United States on late February, they have released nearly 700 prisoners of the Afghan government by far whereas the Afghan government announced only 408 of the inmates were from the Afghan forces–the rest were all civilians.
