Coronavirus Update: Global COVID-19 Death Toll Hits 286,330

May 12 (The Killid Group) — Global deaths linked to the coronavirus has exceeded 280,000 while confirmed cases of the virus has hit more than 4.1 million around the globe.

At least 286,330 people have died from COVID-19 worldwide and 4,177,504 have been infected by the coronavirus pandemic, following an outbreak that started in Chinese central city of Wuhan, in early December.

More than half of the fatalities have been reported by the United States, the United Kingdom and Italy.

The United States is the most heavily-impacted country, having lost at least 80,682 lives to the pandemic while the UK remains another worst-affected part of the world with 32,141 total fatalities followed by Italy with 30,739, a tally by JHU’s coronavirus map indicated.

The U.S. on Sunday reported a total of 1,347,881 infections while the deaths toll in the country hit more than 80,000, according to a tally by JHU.

In the meantime, the World Health Organization announced in a media briefing that the countries where lockdowns and other restrictions were lifted have reported a increase of coronavirus cases over the weekend, CNN quoted him.

“Over the weekend we saw signs of the challenges that may lie ahead. In the Republic of Korea, bars and clubs were shut as a confirmed case led to many contacts being traced,” Tedros said.

“In Wuhan, China, the first cluster of cases since their lockdown was lifted was identified,” Tedros said. “Germany has also reported an increase in cases since an easing of restrictions. Fortunately, all three countries have systems in place to detect and respond to a resurgence in cases,” he continued.

Countries such as Pakistan and Germany as well as China’s central city of Wuhan announced lifting coronavirus restrictions, but WHO cautioned against this practice, saying WHO has released a guidance and six criteria for countries to take into account before easing restrictions and lockdown measures.

COVID-19 first emerged in Wuhan, China, in late December 2019 and was declared a global pandemic three months later and has spread to almost every continent.
