Leaders of National Unity Government Lament Death of Gilani

President Ashraf Ghani expressed deep sorrow over death of Pir Sayed Ahmad Gilani, chairman of High Peace Council (HPC), and said that his death is a great loss to all Afghans. Gilani passed away in National Directorate of Security (NDS) hospital at age 84 last night. A press release from HPC sent to Killid stated that Gilani was hospitalized due to heart attack three days ago in NDS hospital. Meanwhile President Ghani in a statement has said that Afghanistan needed Gilani’s knowledge, guiding, principles, and perspective to ensure peace and stability . He has lamented death of the influential and religious figure who was also the leader of Mahza-i- Melli party. President Ghani stressed that Gilani played a pivotal role in intra-Afghan peace talks with Hizb-e- Islami. Abdullah Abdullah, chief executive, also lamented death of Gilani and added that he always played a positive and constructive role in the country’s political process. Per Sayed Ahmad Gilani was born in 1311 (solar year) in Sorkhrod district of Nangarhar and completed his secondary education at Abo Hanifa High School. He got his B.A degree from Kabul University. Gilani rose to prominence during the 1980s Soviet invasion of Afghanistan as a resistance leader and the founder of the Mahza-i- Melli party, one of seven U.S.-backed groups fighting Russian invaders. The war ended with the Soviet withdrawal in 1989. Three years later Afghanistan’s pro-Moscow government collapsed and the resistance leaders took power. Gilani was appointed as chairman of HPC in February last year.
