Reacting to Vice President Abdul Rashid Dostum’s charge of nepotism against President Ashraf Ghani, the president’s office issued a statement late Tuesday saying his comment was neither appropriate nor in keeping with his position. Dostum must clarify his position, the statement added. On Monday, the president was accused by the vice president of being partial to Pashtuns, particularly those from his province of Logar. At a press conference in Jowzjan province, Dostum said, “If you speak Pashto, you are a very good person and if you are from Logar and speak Pashto then you are a very good person.” The government will sink deeper in crisis if problems among the leaders of the national unity government are not sorted out, said observers.
