Afghanistan Celebrates International Migrants Day

December 18 is celebrated as World Migrants Day around the world. The objective of the day is to highlight the issues that compel the people to opt for migration and the problems that they face during their endeavors. The Day was proclaimed by United Nations General Assembly in December, 2000 after taking into account the large and increasing number of migrant in the world. Afghanistan celebrates the Day while millions of its citiznes are migrants in European countries and this phenomenon is increasingly in the spotlight in the country. Insecurity, conflicts, joblessness, and poverty are all the root causes that Afghans seek refuge in European countries. According to figures given by Ministry of Refugees and Repatriation, more than 6 million Afghans live as migrants in 52 different countries. Physical and psychological insecurity are the reasons for increase of migration in the country, according to Ministry of Refugees and Repatriation. The ministry further stated that withdrawal of foreign troops from Afghanistan has caused unemployment and economic problems and therefore lots of Afghans leave their country for seeking a better life.
