U.S. Condemns ‘Heinous’ Attacks in Afghanistan, Calls on Afghan Gov’t and Taliban to Bring Perpetrators to Justice

The U.S. Department of State in a statement strongly condemned the recent “heinous” attacks in a maternity clinic run by Doctors Without Border in west of Kabul city and during a mourning ceremony in Shiwa district of the eastern Nangarhar province.

The statement called the recent assaults “appalling” during the holy month of Ramadan and amidst a health crisis that has already shaken the war-ravaged Afghanistan.

The U.S. State Department added in the statement that it has “noted” the armed Taliban have issued denial to claim responsibility for these dead-dealing attacks and thus urged the Afghan government and the armed group to “cooperate to bring the perpetrators to justice.”

Afghanistan will remain vulnerable to terrorism as long as there is no reduction in hostilities and no progress toward a political settlement, the statement added.

According to the statement, Afghan people deserve a terror-free future and the current peace process creates a “critical opportunity” for them to seize to unite against terror acts.

Earlier on Tuesday, two consecutive deadly attacks took place in Afghanistan, leaving dozens of civilians, including women and infants killed and injured.

Hours later, Afghan President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani slammed the assaults in strongest terms and ordered the Afghan security and defense forces to shift from defensive position to active offensive position and resume their attacks against the Taliban militants.

But the armed Taliban denied claiming responsibility for the attacks, and in reaction to President Ghani’s order said they were fully ready for any offensive operations, adding that for any ramped up violence, the “Kabul Administration” will be responsible.
