Belarus has apparently found a solution to a major challenge facing Vladimir Putin’s government. Alexander Lukashenko, the Belarus president mediate between Russia and the rebel Russian mercenaries, the head of the Wagner group agreed to withdraw his forces from the city of Rostov and live in exile in Belarus.
Yevgeny Prigozhin said that while his men were only 200 kilometres away from the Russian capital, they halt to advance towards Moscow.
Meanwhile, he said yesterday without providing proof that the Russian military leadership killed a large number of his soldiers in an airstrike in Ukraine. After that, Wagner’s fighters entered the city of Rostov in southern Russia to punish the perpetrators of this attack.
“We are at the military headquarters of Rostov, and the airfield is under our control. We are here, we want to welcome the Armed Forces Chief of Staff, until they arrive, we will be here, encircling the city of Rostov and heading for Moscow.”
However, Russian President Vladimir Putin condemned this performance of the Wagner group and called it a stab in the back.
“These actions destroy our unity, they abandoned our people and friends, and now they are fighting against us. This is a stab in the back to our country and people.”
However, after the mediation of the Belarus President between Russia and the Wagner group, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the criminal case against Yevgeny Prigozhin will be cancelled and Wagner’s forces will not be harassed.
According to reports, the situation around Russia’s southern military district has calmed down after Yevgeny Prigogine and his forces left Rostov.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said that the Russian President cannot control anything and Wagner’s rebellion revealed the confusion in Russia.
