The G7 leaders in their annual summit held on Friday (May 19) in Hiroshima, Japan, focused on the development of relations between Russia and China and the allied countries and expressed concern about China’s nuclear arsenal development, calling it a threat to the stability of the world and the region.
According to reports, the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute “Cipri” said that China has about 350 nuclear warheads, which is few compared to the United States and Russia, but the country’s nuclear arsenal is proliferating.
Meanwhile, Wang Wenbin, China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson criticized this meeting, calling it provocation.
“Japan, the host country of the G7, creates a confrontation that harms regional interests. China firmly opposes it.”
Also, the Pentagon published a report in November saying that China could have about 500 nuclear warheads by 2035.
At the same time, concerns about the development of China’s nuclear arsenal are increasing in the West, and the G7 leaders have warned that without transparency and meaningful dialogue, this would be a serious threat to global and regional stability.
Rishi Sunak, the Prime Minister of Britain and a member of the G7, by concern about China’s nuclear threats to its alliance with Russia, emphasized on taking steps for world peace and security.
“The biggest thing we can do for world peace and security is to support Ukraine in its war against Russia.”
For the first time, the G7 meeting is issuing a statement focusing on nuclear disarmament.
The G7 leaders emphasized their commitment to having a world without nuclear weapons (unparalleled security for all); which strongly refers to the progress of nuclear disarmament in the world’s current situation.
