Protests in Tel Aviv and other Israeli cities turned violent on Saturday night, and pictures and videos on social media show, protesters, breaking barriers in Tel Aviv and lighting fires to block streets, according to Reuters.
The police used water cannons to disperse the protesters.
Since the beginning of January of this year, every Saturday protesters against the plan to review the judicial system of Benjamin Netanyahu’s government come to the streets and start demonstrations.
The organizers of these protests accused Benjamin Netanyahu of undermining Israel’s democratic institutions.
Benjamin Netanyahu has now begun his sixth term as prime minister by forming a coalition of right-wing religious extremists who hold a majority in the country’s parliament.
Critics say that the plans of the new Israeli government to reform the country’s judiciary will increase the executive branch’s control over the appointment of judges and other officials of the judicial system, and will limit the powers of the Supreme Court in the field of canceling approvals or issuing rulings against the government’s actions.
