Security Council members will hold a meeting on Thursday, May 12, “to address increased restrictions on human rights and freedom of girls and women in Afghanistan,” Norway’s mission at U.N. said.
Norway’s mission said the briefing will be done by the U.N. special envoy and head of its assistance mission Deborah Lyons.
Meantime, the U.N. Kabul mission said in a tweet that head of the mission Deborah Lyons in meeting with Islamic Emirate officials called for reopening of secondary schools and rights of women “to be expanded not curtailed.”
She also called on Islamic Emirate officials to allow women “to fully participate in work and public life,” the U.N. assistance mission in Afghanistan added.
Since the return of the Islamic Emirate to power, girls from secondary schools have been banned from attending to school.
Earlier this week, it made an announcement that all women must cover their faces in public, and only leave their homes when necessary, while also warning that violations of the rules will lead to the punishment of their male relatives.
Both have sparked widespread concerns.
