Blinken Discusses Afghanistan with Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi
Secretary of State Antony Blinken pauses as he speaks to reporters during a press briefing at the State Department in Washington, Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2021.

Blinken and Mohammad bin Zayed “discussed important regional matters, reaffirmed their countries’ strong partnership and discussed ways to broaden and deepen their wide-ranging cooperation,” said Ned Price, spokesman for the State Department.

Blinken also acknowledged United Arab Emirate’s support in “hosting and facilitating the safe transit of U.S. citizens, embassy personnel, and foreign nationals from Afghanistan to third countries, and commended the UAE for providing humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan,” Price said.

The UAE has been among those countries that supported the humanitarian efforts in Afghanistan following the departure of U.S. forces and the takeover of power by the Islamic Emirate.

The Middle East country last month reopened its Kabul embassy, months after its diplomatic mission was closed due to escalation of violence.

It has yet to recognize the Islamic Emirate.
