Afghan Gov’t Releases Hundreds of Taliban Prisoners

The Afghan government released hundreds of Taliban prisoners on Friday and Saturday, another large prisoner release since an agreement was reached between the U.S. and the Taliban.

The Afghan National Security Council announced in a statement that as many as 710 Taliban inmates were released by the Afghan government since Friday and would continue on Sunday too until 2,000 of the prisoners are freed.

The prisoners were released from Pul-e-Charkhi prison on the eastern edge of the Afghan capital city of Kabul, Parwan central prisons and other provincial prisons, the statement read.

Meanwhile, scores of Afghan government prisoners were also released by the armed group.

Suhail Shaheen, a spokesman for the office of the Taliban movement, confirmed on Twitter that a total of 73 Afghan forces imprisoned by the group were released from Balkh, Kunduz, Logar, Paktia, Paktika and the southeastern Khost province.

As of today, a total of 420 Afghan government prisoners have been released by the Taliban, as the group’s political spokesman announced on his Twitter account.

The Afghan government, on the other hand, has released more than 2,600 Taliban prisoners from jails across the country.

Under a peace deal struck between the United States and the Taliban, the Afghan government is set to release 5,000 Taliban prisoners while the insurgents to free 1,000 captives of the government, before intra-Afghan negotiations begin.
