A five-member Taliban team has arrived in Kabul to discuss the release, “verification” as well as “identification” of prisoners, a Taliban’s political spokesperson said in a recent tweet.
“A 5-members technical team of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan for the release of prisoners has been sent to Kabul for verification and identification of prisoners,” tweeted Shaheen, adding that “The said team is tasked with addressing technical issues of the prisoners.”
Javid Faisal, a spokesman for the Office of National Security Council (ONSC), earlier on Thursday morning [May, 28] confirmed the presence of Taliban delegation for talks over the prisoner release.
Nearly two months ago, the Taliban sent a three-member team to discuss the disputed prisoner swap process, but broke off talks with the Afghan government on the prisoner exchange, calling it “fruitless meetings”.
However, the two relevant sides continued releasing prisoners that according to the data provided by the Afghan government, as many as 2,000 Taliban inmates, and in response, 260 Afghan prisoners have been released as of today.
