NATO Appoints New Senior Civilian Representative to Afghanistan

May 04 (The Killid Group) — NATO’s Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg appointed Italy’s former ambassador to Pakistan Amb. Stefano Pontecorvo as NATO’s Senior Civilian Representative to Afghanistan.

The Secretary-General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), Mr. Jens Stoltenberg in a statement appointed the former ambassador of Italy to Pakistan, Ambassador Stefano Pontecorvo as the NATO’s next Senior Civilian Representative to Afghanistan.

According to the statement, Ambassador Pontecorvo will start his job on June 01.

NATO’s SG is confident that Amb. Pontecorvo will bring a “long-standing diplomatic experience” on Afghanistan and the region.

His appointment comes as the United States and its NATO allies seek to drawdown their military troops in the war-racked Afghanistan, where the United States has been fighting the Taliban and other insurgents for about 18 years.

A peace pact was reached on February of the ongoing year between the United States and the Taliban that includes a timeline for what could be an eventual total withdrawal of the roughly 12,000 U.S. troops from Afghanistan.
