Nearly three months after Afghans voted in presidential polls, the Independent Election Commission ultimately announced the preliminary results of the presidential elections, Sunday [December 22, 2019].

The Independent Election Commission (IEC) said the total turnout in the presidential election was over 1.8 million with Ghani securing 50.64%, enough to win the first round of voting, beating his main challenger Abdullah Abdullah, who secured over 34% of votes.

Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, however, secured 3.85% of votes ranking third in the preliminary results.

In the meantime, Rahmatullah Nabil obtaining 33,921 votes, Faramarz Tamana 16,066 votes, and Sayed Noorullah Jalili 15,526 votes secured fourth, fifth and sixth ranks respectively.

The head of IEC, Hawa Alam Nuristani, however, told at a press conference in Kabul that the outcome could change after final results and is still subject to be reviewed by the election complaints’ commission.
