NEW YORK, United States – Speaking at the 74th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Pakistani Prime Minister Imran said there was no military solution to resolve the Afghanistan war.

“Look, there is not going to be a military solution,” he said. “For 19 years if you have not been able to succeed, you’re not going to be able to succeed in another 19 years.”

Khan exclaimed Islamabad had played its role in facilitating talks between the United States and the Taliban delegations to help bring peace in Afghanistan, as he called for the US to resume talks with the group.

Khan’s remarks came after the US President Donald Trump called off the peace process, as he refused to meet the Taliban senior delegations, and separately, the Afghan President Ashraf Ghani earlier this month.

In the sideline of the 74th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan met with the US Special Envoy for Afghan peace Zalmay Khalilzad, discussing progress on peace talks with the Taliban.

According to Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Khalilzad shared with the premier “how far his negotiations with the Taliban had gone, the nature of the talks and what expectations he holds in the future,” as Dawn reported.

“So he presented his entire analysis of the US-Taliban talks,” he added.

The talks came a week after Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan vowed to support upcoming presidential elections in Afghanistan, as he discussed peace and elections process with Afghan president Ashraf Ghani on a phone call.
