United States President Donald Trump “called off peace negotiations” and cancelled meeting “major Taliban leaders” and, separately, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani, amid heighten security tensions and successive attacks by Taliban against his forces and civilians in Afghanistan.

“Unbeknownst to almost everyone, the major Taliban leaders and, separately, the President of Afghanistan, were going to secretly meet with me at Camp David on Sunday,” he said in a tweet later that night. “I immediately cancelled the meeting and called off peace negotiations.”

Condemning recent attack in Kabul that killed civilians and a US soldier, Trump said “What kind of people would kill so many in order to seemingly strengthen their bargaining position?”

Trumps assumes Taliban do not have “the power” to come up on a round table and make a solid deal on peace amid ongoing peace talks.

“If they cannot agree to a ceasefire during these very important peace talks, and would even kill 12 innocent people, then they probably don’t have the power to negotiate a meaningful agreement anyway,” he added.

The war in Afghanistan has cost roughly 2,400 American soldiers’ lives, as well as billions of dollar in past 18 years, yet Trump said was “ridiculous” for an “endless war”.

Some 14,000 US troops are still in Afghanistan and senior intelligence officials have repeatedly warned the country remains fragile and could once again become harbor for terrorists if the US pulls out its forces from in Afghanistan.
