Mazar-e-Sharif (The Killid) – Provincial officials of the Criminal Investigation Department nabbed at least one suspect charged with selling horse meat in names of beef, according to local authorities.

Officials discovered some 599 kg of horse meet from the suspect.

Adel Shah Adel, spokesperson for Balk police, said to The Killid, “Sulaiman – who is one of the butchers at Mazar-e-Sharif city market and would sell horse meet in the names of beef – has been arrested.”

Adel further said the suspect during the preliminary investigation has confessed that he would sell these meats on a cart at city market.

Islamic law, only animals that chew their cud (sheep, goats, cows, cattle and camels) consideres halal.

Last year, in somewhat similar cases Balkh police had arrested a number of butchers charged with selling donkey meet in the city.

Sources said, provincial department of health and city mayor has launched control and monitoring operation throughout the city.
