U.K. Cars Surrounding School Zones should be Banned: PHE

United Kingdom’s Public Health officials called for vehicles surrounding school zones should be banned, as a strategy to improve air quality, reports say.

Paul Cosford, the medical director of Public Health England (PHE), told the Times it should be socially unacceptable to leave a car running near school gates, as BBC writes.

It comes after the PHE published a series of recommendations on how the government can possibly reduce air pollution, while it reported 28,000 to 36,000 deaths annually that depict air pollution as growing cause for health condition.

The department authorities also calling for congestion charges to be imposed in cities across the United Kingdom.

According to PHE, air pollution is described as one of the main factors that contributes to the development of coronary heart disease, stroke, respiratory disease and lung cancer, and exacerbates asthma in people across the UK.

Cosford said, “Transport and urban planners will need to work together with others involved in air pollution to ensure that new initiatives have a positive impact,” BBC quoted.

“Decision makers should carefully design policies to make sure that the poorest in society are protected against the financial implications of new schemes,” Cosford added, as quoted by BBC.

Meanwhile, the public health hopes that national government policy could support the move for betterment of the people.
