Ghazni – A number of residents walked out on protest over their demand to promote Jaghori district to a province, as they halted traffic on Kabul-Kandahar highway for three days now, local authorities confirmed on Saturday.
Arif Noori, provincial governor’s spokesman, said that a number of residents have come across hindering traffic on Kabul-Kandahar highway since Thursday on their demand to promote Jaghori district to a province.
The traffic is jammed, main highway blocked, and no vehicles except for those carrying emergency patients can pass the highway, he added. Thousands of passengers and countless vehicle on both sides are halted.
According to Noori, local authorities failed to convince protesters stepping back and open the highway to traffic. He stressed they should address their demand to the central government.
“Copping up with protesters demand is beyond local authorities’ ability, and so they addressed the issue to central government hopping for satisfying respond,” said Noori.
The local authorities, however, have not taken any action on protesters bid for designating new provinces.
It comes after the Independent Directorate of Local Governance (IDLG) and Afghan government discussed on promoting some districts and distant areas to an independent province early this month.
