President Ghani Rejects Resignation of Three Top Security Officials

President Ashraf Ghani has rejected the resignations of the Defense Minister Tariq Shah Bahrami, Interior Minister Wais Ahmad Barmak, and the Intelligence (NDS) Chief Masoom Stanikzai.

The three senior security officials sent their resignations to the president’s palace late on Saturday, after the national security adviser Hanif Atmar resigned.

Government spokesman Haroon Chakansuri said in a statement Ghani had asked the three officials to continue with their duties and “work toward the betterment of the security situation”.

According to the statement, President Ghani has also issued necessary instructions to the security officials for the betterment of the security of the country.

However, reports emerged shortly after the resignation of Atmar, suggesting that President Ghani has called on the Defense and Interior Ministers together with the Intelligence Chief to step down from their positions.
