Ghani Appoints Akbar as AIHRC HeadKABUL (The Killid) – Afghan President Ashraf Ghani appointed Shahzad Akbar as the new Head for Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission.

Presidential Palace in a decree released for public announcement Wednesday said Ghani appointed a new Head and at least eight commissioners for the AIHRC; but the statement did not provide details on identities of the newly appointed commissioners.

Akbar is a graduate of the Department of Development Studies at Oxford University in London. She has previously worked at civil society institutions as Head of Office of the ‘Open Society Foundation’ in Kabul, Head of the organization ‘Afghanistan 1400’ and as Advisor to the President.

She recently served as a deputy to the National Security Council.

Akbar replaces former chairperson Sima Samar, who ran post for the past 17 years.

Sima Samar now is appointed as President Ghani’s Special Envoy and State Minister for Human Rights Affairs and International Relations, according to sources.
