Salang Highway Closed Due to Heavy Snowfall

Officials of maintenance department of Salang said that Salang Pass has remained closed for public due to heavy snowfall.  They said that passenger’s buses, freight and trucks have been stopped on both sides of the tunnel. Gen. Mohammad Rajab, head of maintenance department of Salang, told Killid that they had to close the highway due to severe heavy snowfall and severe storms until the situation gets better. He added that storm in northern Salang is growing every minute and visibility is poor. Rajab further stated that they are currently clearing the road of snow and the highway will soon be opened as soon as traffic problems are solved. Salang Highway connects the northern provinces of Afghanistan with the capital Kabul. Due to heavy snowfall in the winter season, the highway sometimes closes for traffic, forcing passengers to wait for days and even weeks to travel by road.
