The United Nations General Assembly has adopted a resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire in Syria. According to press release, Syria, Russia and China were among the 13 countries that voted against, 122 nations including Japan and the United States voted in favor and 36 abstained. The resolution was proposed by Canada demands an immediate ceasefire in Syria as well as unhindered and unconditional humanitarian access to those in desperate need and was approved by majority vote on Friday. Vetoes by Russia and China blocked a Security Council resolution on Monday that called for a week-long ceasefire in Aleppo.
Backed by Russian airstrikes, Syrian government forces have been trying to take full control of the northern city of Aleppo. The offensive has caused a large number of civilian casualties. Meanwhile Syria’s Foreign Ministry said on Friday that the government is ready to resume talks with oppositions but without any preconditions. The talks have been suspended for the past seven months.
