Officials in Afghanistan’s western province of Ghor said unknown armed men shot dead prominent journalist Friday in Feroz city, the provincial capital of Ghor.

No one has so far been arrested, according to officials, investigations to hunt down perpetrators were underway.

The Afghan government has condemned the attack, saying it continues to support and promote freedom of expression.

U.S. Chargé d’Affaires Ross Wilson also condemned the attack, saying “attacks on freedom of speech & those who seek to inform society are appalling & must end.”

Aimaq, 28, had earlier survived two attacks.

There was no claim of responsibility for his murder.

Attacks against journalists and media workers have seen a rapid increase in Afghanistan. They are targeted either in sticky bombings or targeted killings but often unclaimed.

The attacks have prompted people’s outcry who accuse government of failing to protect its citizens.
