Over 70% of UN Schools in Gaza Damaged or Destroyed

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) has reported that over 70% of its schools in Gaza have either suffered damage or been entirely destroyed. This alarming statistic highlights the humanitarian crisis facing the region, particularly affecting the lives of over 600,000 children, half of whom attend these schools. These children are now navigating a landscape marred by destruction, grappling with severe psychological distress.
As the conflict between Israel and Hamas enters its 333rd day with no ceasefire in sight, criticism is mounting against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for opposing ceasefire agreements and the release of prisoners. International calls for a truce have intensified, reflecting growing global concern over the humanitarian implications of sustained hostilities.
Francesca Albanese, the UN Special Rapporteur on Palestine, has raised warnings regarding the potential replication of genocide witnessed in Gaza within the West Bank. She stated, “The genocide currently being perpetrated by Israelis in Gaza may spread throughout the West Bank due to Israel’s impunity from international courts,” indicating a worrying trend in escalating violence.
Additionally, Sami Abou Zuhri, a leader within Hamas, accused Netanyahu of obstructing ceasefire negotiations. He emphasized that recent statements from U.S. President Joe Biden indicate American acknowledgment of Netanyahu’s role in hindering efforts for peace. Abou Zuhri asserted that Hamas is prepared to engage with any proposal ensuring full Israeli withdrawal from Gaza as part of a ceasefire agreement.
While Biden suggested that a final agreement for prisoner exchange is imminent, he criticized Netanyahu for not taking adequate steps towards implementing such a deal. The key sticking point remains control over the Rafah border with Egypt and Salah al-Din corridor; Netanyahu insists on maintaining control while Hamas demands a complete withdrawal.
