The United Nations special envoy and head of its assistance mission in Afghanistan Deborah Lyons on Monday met with deputy foreign minister Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanikzai.
The U.N. envoy said at the meeting the United Nations offices were open and working to push for the release of Afghanistan’s reserves blocked in western banks as well as foreign countries reopen their diplomatic missions in Kabul, said foreign ministry spokesman Abdul Qahar Balkhi.
The foreign office spokesman meanwhile said that Afghanistan’s senior diplomat acknowledged U.N. for its efforts and urged for support in delivering the salaries of Afghan teachers.
The Islamic Emirate was committed to promises on education, the deputy foreign minister said.
Foreign countries have increased their humanitarian aid to Afghanistan since the Islamic Emirate took power, but halted its development assistance.
They have conditioned their response to Afghanistan crises and recognition of the new government on the behavior of its new rulers and until the rulers provide assurances that they will uphold human rights, particularly the rights of women and girls.
