Chair of the country’s High Council for National Reconciliation, Abdullah Abdullah, who oversees government peace talks with the Taliban in Doha, said that he met and discussed the peace process and Kabul-Washington military cooperation with head of the U.S. central command and newly-appointed commander in charge of the remaining American forces in Afghanistan Gen. Frank McKenzie.
The meeting was held Tuesday in Abdullah’s office, in Kabul.
The meeting comes a day after the American general met with President Ghani in the palace—just hours after he took charge of the U.S. forces’ command from Gen. Austin S. Miller, with the U.S. military presence in Afghanistan also nearing to an end.
The two sides discussed the new chapter of relations between Kabul and Washington as well as the United States’ cooperation with Afghan forces, according to a presidential statement.
U.S. and allies are to leave the country on August 31, marking the end of foreign forces’ military presence in Afghanistan.
