COVID-19 and Violence against Women: Herat Sees 50% Increase in Cases of Violence

As coronavirus spread across the country, domestic violence cases has also jumped, creating a fertile ground for deepening different kinds of violence against women, Behnaz Jahed, a women rights activist in the western Herat province spoke to TKG.

Reports of violence against women as well as investigations carried out by civil society organizations during the COVID-19 pandemic illustrated that the western Herat province saw 50% rise in cases of violence against women, she said.

There was no data of total cases of violence against women, Mrs. Jahed highlighted, but added that most cases included physical abuses, insults, family conflicts and child marriages.

Some of the women rights supporting organizations, however, said most of the cases of violence against women weren’t registered due to fears of the novel coronavirus.
