(TKG) While the release of 5,000 Taliban prisoners was a part of the peace agreement between the Taliban and the United States, the Afghan government recently said that there is no commitment to release 5,000 Taliban prisoners.

On the basis of the U.S.-Taliban peace accord, with the coordination of all parties involved in Afghanistan’s peace, five thousand Taliban prisoners would be released in exchange for one thousand Afghan prisoners, before intra-Afghan negotiations.

The Afghan President, Mohammad Ashraf Ghani, however, held a news conference few hours after the signing of the U.S.-Taliban peace agreement and said that the Afghan government has no commitment for the release of Taliban prisoners.

Asked about the release of prisoners, President Ghani said in the press conference that the decision to the release of the Taliban prisoners is related to the government and the Afghan nation, and there is no prerequisite for the release of the group’s 5,000 prisoners.

The president, meanwhile, said that the negotiating team with the Taliban will be a board from the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, but they will not be authorized.

The president quoted the Taliban’s proposed constitutional amendment as saying that we would not violate any of the constitutional article.

The peace accord was ultimately signed between the representatives of U.S. and the Taliban on Saturday, February 29, that will unlock the intra-Afghan talks between the Taliban and Afghan stakeholders, to decide the future course of the country.

The intra-Afghan negotiations, according to reports, is set to take place on 10th of March of the ongoing year.
