MAZAR-E-SHARIF (The Killid Group) – NATO Senior Civilian Representative to Afghanistan Nikolas Kay says NATO forces will remain committed to support upcoming Presidential Elections due on Sep. 28, as he hopes a “direct Afghan-Taliban negotiations” will be held in nearing future.
At a press conference in Mazar-e-Sharif city on Monday, Kay said a short break has come across as both parties wrapped up at least nine round of talks, but hopes soon the negotiations will be resumed to determine the long lasting desire of Afghans for peace.
“I therefore hope we are only seeing now a slight pause in the process and very soon we will get into a situation when there is a direct Afghan-Taliban negotiations to solve the conflict peacefully,” he said.
Key exclaimed NATO forces had been working alongside Afghan security forces to hold a secure election in Afghanistan, and would not allow the armed opposition groups to succeed in their wrongdoings.
NATO will continue to support Afghan security forces, provide assistance, consultancy, and military missions in Afghanistan until peace and stability is achieved throughout the country, Kay said.
“Our job is to create the conditions for that peaceful negotiation and we do that by training Afghan security forces and assisting them and we will continue to do that to ensure the Taliban will not won on the battlefield,” he added.
