International Day of Remembrance for Victims of Terrorism: A Call for Peace and Reflection

In a statement released by the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), the organization’s head, Roza Otunbayeva, acknowledged the significant toll that over four decades of conflict has taken on the Afghan people. “Today, we honor the victims of terrorism and reflect on their unimaginable suffering,” Otunbayeva stated, expressing a heartfelt hope for an end to the ongoing struggles faced by Afghans.

The statement from UNAMA emphasized that the commemoration extends beyond mere remembrance; it serves as a global call to action. The United Nations urges nations, particularly those grappling with war and conflict, to renew their commitment to achieving lasting peace through intensified efforts and constructive dialogue.

The establishment of August 21st as the International Day of Remembrance for Victims of Terrorism by the UN General Assembly in 2017 underscores the global recognition of the need to address the impacts of terrorism on individuals and societies alike.
