Ursula von der Leyen called the recent protests in Iran “A voice of equality and women’s rights” and in support of the protestors, demanded the imposition of sanctions on the Iranian government.
He also added that the European Union should declare its support for humanitarian values in Iran and support the women who fight for these values.
The head of the European Commission added: “This is the voice of equality and women’s rights, and our message must be clear. We must demand an end to violence. Women should have the opportunity to choose and we should hold accountable, those who are responsible for oppressing women.”
After protests in Iran escalated due to the death of Mahsa Amini in the custody of the Islamic Republic’s Guidance Forces, the US and many western countries have criticized the behavior of the Iranian government towards the protesters.
On Monday (10 October), Britain implemented sanctions against a foundation and several senior political and security officials in Iran.
Germany, France, Denmark, Spain, Italy, and the Czech Republic have demanded new EU sanctions against Iran.
