“Without a more concerted effort from the international community, almost every man, woman and child in Afghanistan could face acute poverty, U.N. chief Antonio Guterres tweeted on Saturday.
There is a need to take actions now to avert economic and social breakdown and “further suffering of millions of Afghans,” Guterres said.
“We need to act now to prevent economic and social collapse and find ways to prevent further the suffering of millions of Afghans,” he said.
The U.N. chief on Thursday urged the international community to fund the U.N.’s $5 billion humanitarian appeal, release frozen assets belonging to Afghanistan and jump-start its banking system to avert economic and social collapse.
The Islamic Emirate returned to power on mid-August last year.
Following the takeover, nearly $10 billion in Afghan assets were blocked by western countries, mostly by the United States, worsening the economic squeeze.
