A presidency statement said that President Ghani is set to discuss diplomatic ties between Kabul and Washington, the U.S. support of the Afghan forces, its development and economic cooperation as well as the fight against terrorism in meeting with his counterpart President Joe Biden and American lawmakers.
Afghan peace broker Abdullah Abdullah who oversees government talks with the Taliban also confirmed his trip to Washington, saying the government delegation will “discuss a wide range of issues pertaining to current and future relations, commitments and peace” in their two-day visit
The White House earlier on June 21 invited the two leaders for a visit to the United States.
“The visit by President Ghani and Dr. Abdullah will highlight the enduring partnership between the United States and Afghanistan as the military drawdown continues,” read the statement by the White House.
President Joe Biden will assure Afghan leaders that his country is committed to supporting the Afghan people by providing diplomatic, economic, and humanitarian assistance to support the Afghan people, including Afghan women, girls and minorities.
The U.S. President will also assure Afghan leaders that Afghanistan never again becomes a safe haven for terrorists.
The visits also comes as there is slow progress in talks between government and Taliban negotiation teams and amid surge in fighting between government forces and Taliban.
The United States encourages all Afghan parties to participate meaningfully in negotiations to bring an end to the conflict, according to the White House’s statement.
This is Afghan leaders’ first trip to U.S. since Joe Biden took office as President.
