Abdul Satar Mirzakwal, Acting Minister of Interior, on Thursday visited Kunduz to assess the security situation and meet provincial officials, said spokesman for the ministry Tariq Arian.
The minister also aims to boost coordination between Afghan security and defense forces, proper deployment of forces and to quell anti-government elements in the province.
The fighting between government forces and Taliban are ongoing across the province.
Several districts, including Imam Sahib where Shir Khan port is situated had fallen to Taliban.
The capture Shir Khan Bandar (port) is the most significant gain for the Taliban since the U.S. began the final stage of its troop withdrawal in May.
The port in the far north of Afghanistan, about 50 kilometers (30 miles) from Kunduz city and near the border with Tajikistan is of great importance for the two neighboring countries.
