Government forces kicked off overnight operations against Taliban in Balkh district, said Hanif Rezaie, a spokesman for the army in the north.

Following the hours-long operation that last for four hours, the district was cleared off from Taliban presence, he said.

According to the spokesman, as many as 31 Taliban were killed during the operation.

It comes as members of parliament, provincial council and jihadi commanders on Monday gathered, declaring nationwide mobilization against Taliban.

They assured Taliban would not be allowed to enter Mazar-e-Sharif.

Taliban had advanced near the western gate of Mazar-e-Sharif on Monday, but they were pushed back as commando forced were dispatched to the area.
