The visit to discuss U.S. troop withdrawal comes amid surge in fighting between government forces and Taliban.

“The visit by President Ghani and Dr. Abdullah will highlight the enduring partnership between the United States and Afghanistan as the military drawdown continues,” read the statement by the White House.

President Joe Biden will assure Afghan leaders that his country is committed to supporting the Afghan people by providing diplomatic, economic, and humanitarian assistance to support the Afghan people, including Afghan women, girls and minorities.

The U.S. President will also assure Afghan leaders that Afghanistan never again becomes a safe haven for terrorists.

The visits also comes as there is slow progress in talks between government and Taliban negotiation teams.

The United States encourages all Afghan parties to participate meaningfully in negotiations to bring an end to the conflict, according to the White House’s statement.

This is Afghan leaders’ first trip to U.S. since Joe Biden took office as President.
