Taliban fighters evacuated Bangi and Khaja Ghar districts of country’s Takhar province following Afghan forces’ raids that inflicted heavy casualties to the militants, said Fawad Aman, a spokesman for the Ministry of Defense.
The operation was ongoing, according to the spokesman, and efforts were underway to clear other areas.
The Taliban officials have yet to comment.
Takhar, located in the northeastern Afghanistan, has a deteriorated security situation.
The fighting between government forces and Taliban fighters has surged as foreign troops continue leaving the country.
