As many as eight policemen were killed and several others wounded last night in attack on an outpost in Lashkargah city, provincial capital of southern Helmand, said head of provincial council Attaullah Afghan.
The cause was unknown, he said.
Local sources meanwhile said an infiltrator opened fire and killed nine of his colleagues at the same area.
The attacker managed to flee the area, according to the sources.
Officials in the province have yet to comment, nor was there claim of responsibility.
