Foreign Minister Mohammad Haneef Atmar on Monday morning met with U.S. Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad in Kabul, Foreign Ministry’s spokesman Gran Hewad told TKG.
Both discussed Afghanistan’s peace process, the new chapter of relations between Washington and Kabul as well as threats and opportunities in the post pullout.
Regional cooperation, tri- and multilateral relations, ways to boost regional consensus as well as expanding ties after the withdrawal of international troops were also among the meeting deliberations, the spokesman added.
The U.S. peace envoy reaffirmed its commitment to work with Afghanistan on peace and the combat against terrorism.
The visit comes as Washington’s special envoy for Afghanistan reconciliation has begun his trips to the region to advance the peace process.
The envoy, Zalmay Khalilzad, on Sunday held talks with Afghan leaders in Kabul, including President Ashraf Ghani and Abdullah Abdullah, chair of Afghanistan’s High Council for National Reconciliation which oversees the government’s talks with the Taliban in Qatar.
