A U.S. inter-agency delegation, including the National Security Council, Department of Defense, and USAID will accompany him, according to a statement by U.S. State Department.
“In Kabul, the delegation will meet with the Afghanistan government, other political leaders, and civil society representatives, including women’s groups, to hear their views on the peace process” it read.
“The delegation will underscore enduring U.S. support for Afghanistan’s development and a political settlement that will end the war.”
Mr. Khalilzad will also encourage the two warring sides “to make tangible progress toward a political settlement that protects the gains of the last two decades.”
According to the statement, the U.S. delegation will also meet regional leaders, discussing the country’s peace process “and the potential for increased regional trade, commerce, and development that peace might bring.”
The trip comes as negotiation teams from both sides have recently met with U.N. officials in Doha, with the team representing the Afghan government voicing hope over the resumption of peace talks.
