In a pre-ministerial meeting on Monday, May 31, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said the NATO leaders are set to discuss a range of issues, including the way forward for allies’ engagement in Afghanistan.

The NATO chief meanwhile told reporters that Afghanistan’s security situation remains very difficult and challenging.

“We made the decision to end our mission within weeks.” I think we have to understand that the intention was never to stay in Afghanistan forever,” he added.

He reaffirmed NATO’s support to Afghanistan saying, supports to the country will be stepped up in other ways.

Asked about Afghan forces in the face of security threats without foreign forces, Mr. Stoltenberg said Afghans had to take full responsibility for their own future at some stage.

He reiterated that NATO’s support will continued but not through a military presence.

All international forces are to leave Afghanistan by September 11, ending two decades of foreign military presence in the country.
